A witness to history

Nagao Yasushi, the Mainichi Shimbun photographer who won the Pulitzer Prize for this extraordinary photo of the assassination of Socialist Party leader Asanuma Inejiro by Yamaguchi Otoya, was found dead Saturday. He was seventy-eight. The assassination, which occurred on 12 October 1960 was the capstone on what was perhaps the most momentous year in postwar Japanese politics.

Requiescat in pace.

According to the obit, Nagao was discovered dead in his home in Minami Izu. He lived by himself.

Minami Izu is the southern tip of the Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka Prefecture. It is a tiny sub-tropical enclave surrounded by area resembling the Pacific Northwest. He likely had a window facing the ocean and was probably very happy to end his days in such a beautiful location.
